Via Mediterranea: La Spezia, maritime crossroads and naval heritage

Located in Liguria, La Spezia is a major port whose maritime history dates back to Roman times, then known as Portus Lunae. Its growth accelerated in the 19th century with the construction of the maritime military arsenal in 1869, which transformed the city into one of the main naval bases in Italy. The Marina Militare Arsenal and its naval museum, the largest in Italy, bear witness to this rich heritage: the museum preserves more than 150 ship models, 2,500 medals, 1,500 cap ribbons, 6,500 relics, 6,500 relics, 5,500 volumes, 5,500 volumes and 2,000 technical and historical documents, as well as a remarkable collection of technical and historical documents, as well as a remarkable collection of leading figures including those of the San Giovanni and the Royal Transport Cambria of 1846.
The port of La Spezia, with more than 5 km of quays and modern infrastructures, plays a central role in Mediterranean and European trade, providing connections with more than 200 ports in the world.
Beyond its industrial importance, La Spezia inspires artists and writers, seduced by its landscapes and its atmosphere: the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein), her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, as well as Lord Byron, who stayed in the Gulf, were marked by the beauty of these places. The presence of these English romantic poets in the region explains why this gulf is known under the name of “Golfo dei Poeti” (Gulf of Poets), a name given in 1910 by the playwright Sem Benelli.
