Description
At the heart of French maritime heritage, the Grayhound embodies the revival of a centuries-old nautical heritage. A faithful replica of an 18th century corsair luger, this sailboat testifies to the ingenuity and audacity of Breton sailors who have marked maritime history.
History
Launched in 2012 in Plymouth by Marcus Rowden and Freya Hart, the Grayhound perpetuates the soul of the lugers, those fast and maneuverable vessels that crisscrossed the Channel coast. With its three angled masts, its one-third sails and its traditional rigging, it recalls the glorious era of privateers, those sailor-adventurers who sailed between trade, exploration and confrontation.
Today, the Grayhound transcends its historical heritage. Based in Penzance, it offers sightseeing cruises to the Isles of Scilly, offering sailing enthusiasts an authentic traditional sailing experience. But his vocation does not end there. Since 2014, it has also been an innovative player in sailing maritime transport, collaborating with TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) for the ecological transport of goods.
Regularly participating in major French maritime festivals such as Temps fête Douarnenez and Brest, the Grayhound is more than just a boat: it is a living ambassador of maritime heritage, which combines respect for tradition and contemporary commitment to more sustainable navigation.
His career perfectly illustrates the ability to adapt and the resilience of French maritime traditions, transforming a historical heritage into a modern and ecological navigation solution.
